About the cover: Hold Me…Release Me; Watercolour by a Healthcare Provider.

“Hold Me…Release Me” reflects the journey of cancer patients wanting to be held close to loved ones when they are first diagnosed, as well as throughout their battle with treatments and remission periods. The fight is long, seeminglyrelentless, and incredibly difficult. So when the path is determined, be it death or renewed life, the time has come for the patients to release themselves from theagony of the struggle and for loved ones to release the patients to their fate. Within both settings of holding on tight and releasing, there should be the backdrop of peace, serenity, warmth, and calm.  As the sun falls down below the Earth’s horizon, these feelings are shared among the onlookers. It is in this setting that one can finally release him- or herself from the struggle and let all who are close know that all will be okay.

The watercolour artwork on the cover of this issue is entitled “Hold Me…Release Me” and was named Best Watercolour by a Healthcare Provider in the 2008 Lilly Oncology On Canvas: Expressions of a Cancer Journey Art Competition and Exhibition.

Oncology On Canvas was created by Eli Lilly and Company as a way to honour the journeys people take when confronted with a cancer diagnosis. The program invited people diagnosed with any type of cancer, their families and friends, cancer advocates, healthcare providers, as well as artists and art students to express, through art and in narrative, their own cancer journeys.

All winners were awarded a monetary donation to the cancer charity of their choice.

The rich and enduring collection of art is travelling the world and continues to touch the hearts and minds of people everywhere.

Current Oncology is committed to the Canadian oncology community as well as oncology communities around the world. We are pleased to help raise awareness of this great program created by Lilly. Current Oncology will be selecting a new artwork for each cover from previous and upcoming competitions.
